What are the benefits of having a tutor?

Working with a VTO tutor will boost your child’s confidence in maths and English; improve their engagement with school; grow their self-esteem and develop their social skills.

This is what parents/guardians think about tutoring:

“The one to one has been brilliant for my child’s reading”

“I think my child’s confidence has grown – which has helped her schooling in class and at home. I think the tutors have helped my child.”

How we work

When you refer a child to get one-to-one tuition, one of our Learning Communities Co-ordinators (LCC) will work to evaluate their needs and find the most suitable type of help. They will find a Volunteer Tutor whose interests and experience will be best suited to help your child. The LCC will arrange to meet you, your child and the tutor at your home, so that you can meet each other and discuss expectations. If all parties agree to the tuition, you will be able to arrange the time and day of tuition directly with the Tutor. Tuition typically takes place for an hour a week, at the child’s home, however if a different venue would be preferable, this can also be arranged.

All of our tutors are members of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme, and have relevant training on child protection, however we ask that a parent/guardian is present at all times during tuition sessions.

The VTO also runs homework groups throughout Glasgow. These are supported by sixth year pupil volunteers from local schools as well as adult volunteer tutors. If you would like your child to participate in a homework group, please contact us for more information.
