You have to be at least 16 years for our Homework Groups and 18 to tutor a child at home. You do not need any experience provided you speak English fluently, all you need are sound literacy and numeracy skills.

You will be asked to complete an application form, then have an interview with one of our staff who will help you complete your PVG application (The Disclosure process) we will then put you through an online induction training course before you are matched with a pupil.

You will be expected to tutor your pupil for one hour per week during the school term. When you add preparation time this will usually take no more than a total of 2 hours of your time each week.

You will be a volunteer and will not get paid but we do provide reasonable out of pocket expenses such as travel costs and any materials you feel you might need. Before spending money on materials please ask the VTO staff as we have a significant library of resources that you will have access to.

The VTO has several trained staff whose role is to support our volunteers. We also have an extensive library of books and materials that you can use as well as specialist help with any particular issue you may come across. In addition to our compulsory induction training, we also have several other training courses concentrating on areas such as reading, maths and arithmetic.

You will be matched to a pupil and will work with them on a one-to-one basis. With this focused support, you will build the pupils confidence, improve their academic attainment and improve their overall life chances.
Not only will you gain experience working with young people, but it will also enhance your CV or personal statement. We will also sign off the volunteering sections of Duke of Edinburgh and Saltire awards as well providing you with a reference. It goes without saying you will have a tremendous sense of well being at giving something back to your community.

As part of the application process, you will be asked your preferences for the type of pupil you would like to tutor and the level of tutoring you would feel comfortable with. You will also be asked to say which area you would like to work in. During the matching process, we will take all these factors into account when finding you a pupil to tutor.

Yes, you will be entitled to claim 30p per mile to cover the cost of fuel or reasonable bus or train fares.

This depends on the project you are involved in. Homework Groups operate at fixed times and therefore are not flexible. With Home Tuition you can agree on a suitable day/time with the pupil and their family. What is really important is that you communicate if you cannot make your commitment that week as the children will be relying on you to turn up. Normally you will be tutoring for one hour per week. However, you should allow some time for lesson planning too.

We are always looking for volunteers to help us fundraise, provide support with our administration and help with training and supporting our volunteers. Additionally, you could help by joining our management committee and assist with the running of the organisation.
